TGOD, (Turkish Go Association), is an umbrella organisation of go players in Türkiye.
In 1988, the first go players in Türkiye had a meeting: Alpar Kılınç, who is considered as the founder of go in Türkiye, and Mehmet Dardeniz. They began playing go at METU and established the METU Go Club in '89. Next year, a go club under the umbrella of the 'Turkish-Japanese Friendship and Solidarity Association' will be founded by Alpar Kılınç. In 1993, they became a member of the International Go Federation. On January 8, 1995, the passing away of Alpar Kılınç along with his friend Cem Kendi, in a traffic accident, deeply saddened the local go community. After 30 years, METU Go Club still holds an international tournament in memory of Alpar Kılınç each year.
Go Players Association was officially established on March 30, 1995, with its headquarters in Ankara. The following year, Türkiye became a member of the European Go Federation. The association adopted the name "Turkish Go Players Association" in '97.
Since 2022, we have called ourselves the “Turkish Go Association”.
The 2000s saw the rise of new Go communities and clubs at universities like Hacettepe, Bilkent, İTÜ, and Galatasaray. Go clubs started expanding beyond Ankara and Istanbul, with Eskisehir, Bursa, Antalya, İzmir and Çanakkale also joining in. Go tournaments began setting attendance records, growing from the 2004 Turkish Go Championship with 43 players to the 2006 Istanbul International Go Tournament with 76 players. In 2017, 24th Alpar Kılınç Memorial Tournament hosted 208 players in total, which is the current record in Türkiye.
Today, Türkiye has around 300 active players and Go is offered as an elective course at some of the major universities. The annual international tournament of Istanbul hosts plenty of European players. Each year, around 20 national tournaments and numerous local events are held. The Association remains one of the most active members of the European Go Federation, promoting go at all levels.
